The election is next week! This is a great article from the perspective of the people at the top of the natural foods industry.

It seems like every time I try to type in anything relating to Prop 37 on google the first thing that pops up is an ad for the “No on 37″ website. I’ve yet to find clear, concise facts on the www.noprop37.com website, but I urge you to check it out and educate yourself on well, propaganda?

The Cornucopia Institute released an article with a fairly well known picture showing a wide variety of “natural” companies owned by big corporations who are against Prop 37 and have $34 million to show for it. The organic industry raised a little over $4 million, so I wouldn’t call the game exactly fair. Be sure to get to know the facts and share them with those around you so that you can make an educated decision in November!!!

And check out this website; they’re doing something right.

“Nine-year-old Martha Payne from Argyll in Scotland began writing a blog providing a first-hand view of school lunches last week. NeverSeconds started as a writing project with her Dad and the blog, featuring photos, reviews and ratings, has received a large amount of online and press attention from around the world.”

USDA Forces Whole Foods to Accept Monsanto GMOs

In the light of our upcoming Label GMO campaign, here’s why you can’t take for granted that the food you’re buying doesn’t have genetically modified food. Even Whole Foods is supporting Monsanto.

Farm Bill Updates (via @MichaelPollan)

Good Morning REAL FOODIES!

Looking for the latest update on America’s Farm Bill and Obama’s perspective of our current food system??
Check out this article from The American Prospect

http://prospect.org/article/crash-diet

In the beginning of the article it highlights President Obama’s own eating habits. If our President eats healthy, sustainable, REAL food… so should our nation. The unfortunate reality of the situation isn’t as simple. Even though Obama himself may be on the track to real food, a Republican Congress just won’t let this slide.

As Californian’s we boast one of the largest and strongest food systems in the country. How would changes to our national food policy effect California and more specifically Cal Poly? Read on, form your own opinions and et us know what you think!

Enjoy & keep it real this weekend.

They have a “Food” section where you can find all sorts of interesting, informative, and sometimes even disturbing posts about food. Instead of reading your food news, now you can listen to it!

One of their most recent posts discusses a lawsuit between Chik-fil-a and an artist who made a t-shirt with the slogan “Eat More Kale” mimicking the company’s “Eat More Chikin” slogan.

Can’t Label This: GMO Ingredients

If you want to avoid sugar, aspartame, trans-fats, MSG, or just about anything else, you read the label. If you want to avoid G.M.O.’s — genetically modified organisms — you’re out of luck. They’re not listed. You could, until now, simply buy organic foods, which by law can’t contain more than 5 percent G.M.O.’s. Now, however, even that may not work.

In the last three weeks, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved three new kinds of genetically engineered (G.E.) foods: alfalfa (which becomes hay), a type of corn grown to produce ethanol), and sugar beets. And the approval by the Food and Drug Administration of a super-fast-growing salmon — the first genetically modified animal to be sold in the U.S., but probably not the last — may not be far behind.

It’s unlikely that these products’ potential benefits could possibly outweigh their potential for harm. But even more unbelievable is that the F.D.A.and the U.S.D.A. will not require any of these products, or foods containing them, to be labeled as genetically engineered, because they don’t want to “suggest or imply” that these foods are “different.”

This is truly scary: the USDA and Obama administration have just approved the unlimited, unregulated sale and planting of genetically engineered alfalfa seeds.

“Alfalfa is the main forage crop for dairy cows and one of the principle foods for beef cows, especially grass-fed cattle. Alfalfa is a perennial, easily lasting five years once planted. And it’s bee-pollinated, which means each year, every non-GE alfalfa plant within five miles of every GE alfalfa plant will likely be contaminated by GE genes.”

“…the massive planting of a chemical and energy-intensive GE perennial crop, alfalfa [is] guaranteed to spread its mutant genes and seeds across the nation; guaranteed to contaminate the alfalfa fed to organic animals; guaranteed to lead to massive poisoning of farm workers and destruction of the essential soil food web by the toxic herbicide, Roundup; and guaranteed to produce Roundup-resistant superweeds that will require even more deadly herbicides such as 2,4 D to be sprayed on millions of acres of alfalfa across the U.S.”

Taco Bell’s “beef?”

Mmmm…

People sometimes ask what’s wrong with our food system. This is an extreme example, but an example nonetheless.

The USDA defines “beef” as 100% animal meat, and “taco meat filling” as 40% animal meat. Taco Bell’s “beef” is only 36% beef
